Frequently Asked Questions for Providers

Please reach us at mmlp@mmaoffice.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You have received an invoice that is the Montana Medical Legal Panel’s Annual Assessment. The way you know it is official is it will have the Seal of the State of Montana on it. This assessment is set by statute, so your payment or exemption must made and updated on an annual basis. Even if you choose Exempt, you will receive this annually and you will need to keep the MMLP updated.

It is important to note, that if you choose to claim the Exemption and you are then named in a claim, you may not receive benefit of the confidential, peer review, panel process. Rather, you will proceed directly in a District Court.

  1. If you are subject to the MMLP fee, pay the assessment. Keep a receipt for your records.
  2. If you believe you are exempt from the annual assessment complete the exemption survey found here.
  3. To be exempt you must NOT reside in Montana, your principal practice must NOT be in Montana, and you MUST NOT practice telemedicine of any sort while you are working in Montana to be eligible for the exemption and your patients must not be in Montana. (Phone calls with patients, telehealth visits, utilization reviews, consultations with other providers, and/or reading imaging studies are all considered practice of telemedicine). The statutory definition of Telemedicine can be found here.

Make sure that you keep the date open for your participation. These hearings usually take 4 to 5 hours (including deliberations), please set that time aside. MMLP staff will notify with further instructions. If you have any questions, you can contact them at (406) 443-1110.

Please contact MMLP staff at (406) 443-1110 you should have received an electronic Sharefile link to access the documents.
